Every now and then I get rid of a piece of furniture from my apartment. My method of disposal is to put the item out in a gated area behind my apartment building, accessible only to people who live in the same building. No matter what object I put out there, no matter what it's state of disrepair, someone invariably picks it up within fifteen minutes.
During the past year, I have gotten rid of a couch, a chair, a file cabinet, an umbrella stand, and a stereo cabinet. The uniform speed with which these items disappear makes me suspect that one person is snatching them up for her or his apartment. Somewhere in the building I inhabit, my apartment is being reassembled, piece by piece albeit frozen in a snapshot of my life in 1998.

My first visit to San Diego left me pretty impressed. It's the eighth largest city in the US and we Angelinos have a bad tendency to forget it exists. On the contrary, San Diego is the true Southern California City.
There'll be more on San Diego later, but for now I'll mention that apart from the rather Planet of the Apes like Salk Center by Louis Kahn, the UCSD campus is home to William L. Pereira Associates' Geisel Library.

There are lots of images of the Geisel Library to come. As always, Pereira Associates produced a simply stunning edifice. The library is named after Audrey S. and Theoder Seuss Geisel, as in the Mrs. and Dr. Seuss.

Today I go to give a lecture at University of California, San Diego. My old friend Lev Manovich teaches there. For his writing and projects involving new media (especially computers and the Internet) and art, go to his website.
