Form Zero closed yesterday, to reopen in three months somewhere in downtown Los Angeles. Following SCI_Arc's move downtown, Form Zero's closure marks a final end to the Santa Monica school of architecture. Well after 25 years, why not? It outlasted the Bauhaus, HfG-Ulm, postmodernism, and decon. And we think we live in rapidly changing times...

In a mad quest for real estate dollars coupled with a misguided mission to create an "authentic" urban experience in a city that already has its own kind of urbanism, Los Angeles developers have been trying to resurrect derelict buildings downtown. Generally, the results have not been too appealing. This mad quest for the "authentic" at low cost results in what might best be termed Styrofoam Urbanism™, as seen below.
