your own black hole

"You must create your underground because now there’s no more underground, no more avant-garde, no more marginality. You can create your personal underground, your own black hole, your own singularity."

  1. baudrillard + arendt
this might sound like old news, but today i lectured on hannah arendt’s the public realm, so this baudrillard interview made me think of her take on how society dissolves the separation between public and private. as a consequence, we loose our ability to appreciate different points of view in the public realm, leading to either radical isolation or mass hysteria. arendt sees mass society as a consequence of the breakdown of the public realm, because it stifles the individuality and competition strived for in the greek public realm, and instead it replaces with the homogeneity of the masses.

what interests me about arendt’s argument is the role of public space [public space that works] as the place for difference and argument, the place of individuality.

turns out somebody already connected baudrillard and arendt:

Sorry for the incessant music references, but that reminds me very much of one of the bands I used to listen to when I was young … the big boys. Their slogan, visible on all their albums was, “Go Start Your Own Band.”

    Which we did ….
